Coordination With Others Promoting Federalist Values

To promote an idea most effectively, it is critical to leverage Center resources to encourage other institutions to advance its principles. As mentioned earlier, there are institutions with related but not identical missions. One function of the Center would be to coordinate and focus resources upon specific problems identified by the Center to be supported and promoted by other institutes and think tanks.

Coordination would be accomplished by telephone nationally and in person in Washington where so many of these groups are headquartered and where most others visit regularly. One specific function should be a monthly or bi-monthly dinner of institute chief executives and other social interaction to share information and leverage resources. This would also immediately raise the visibility of the Center to a very important audience that would have positive spillover to potential supporters of the Center generally. Special arrangements could be made with these groups to jointly fund mutually attractive events and programs.

James Madison Program

LINK: http://web.princeton.edu/sites/jmadison/events/spring.htm

The James Madison Program in American Ideals and Institutions in the Department of Politics at Princeton University promotes teaching and scholarship in constitutional law and political thought. Under the leadership of its director, Robert P. George, and with the guidance and support of an advisory board from the worlds of law, business, philanthropy and the academy, the Madison Program sponsors and guides research and teaching at the undergraduate, graduate and post-doctoral levels.

The James Madison Program honors the Princeton graduate (and undergraduate student) who became the principal architect of the Constitution and the fourth President of the United States. The Program builds upon Princeton's traditional strengths in public law and jurisprudence. This celebrated tradition goes back to Woodrow Wilson, the first McCormick Professor of Jurisprudence in Princeton's Department of Politics. This tradition has been carried on by his successors, W. F. Willoughby, Edward S. Corwin, Alpheus T. Mason, Walter F. Murphy, and Robert P. George.

Clemson Institute

Exploring the Moral Foundations of Capitalism Founded in the fall of 2005 with a generous grant from the BB&T Charitable Foundation, the Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism is dedicated to exploring the moral, legal, constitutional, political and economic foundations of capitalism. The Clemson Institute is particularly devoted to fostering a serious examination of a free society. The Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism will foster a world-class conversation on certain basic questions:

  • What are the moral foundations of a free society?
  • Are there objective principles of morality and justice on which the institutions of governments must rest and by which the decisions of public officials can be evaluated?
  • What role should government play in a capitalist system?
  • What is the proper relationship between government and the individual?
  • What structures of government are most conducive to promoting the ideals of a free society?
  • What is the relationship between economic and intellectual freedom?

To advance its mission, the Clemson Institute implements a number of programs. Currently, the Clemson Institute is sponsoring a variety of conferences, lectures, seminars and colloquia, a "Junior Fellows" program that provides Clemson undergraduates with an opportunity to interact with some of the country's leading scholars on capitalism, and two one-week seminars for high school students on the moral foundations of capitalism. In the future, the Clemson Institute will sponsor a visiting scholars program, summer seminars for college students, and an undergraduate program that focuses on the moral, legal, constitutional, political and economic foundations of a free society. The success of the Clemson Institute for the Study of Capitalism depends on the support of foundations and private individuals who share its commitment to advancing the understanding and appreciation of the system of free minds and free markets. We are deeply grateful to all who support our venture.

Hillsdale Center/Hillsdale College

LINK: http://www.hillsdale.edu

Hillsdale College in Hillsdale, Michigan is a strong liberal arts college with 1,200 students. Offering 32 traditional majors, six interdisciplinary majors, and nine pre-professional programs, Hillsdale consistently ranks highly nationwide in U.S. News & World Report, among other publications. Its core curriculum exemplifies the tradition of a classic liberal arts program. All students, regardless of major, are required to take courses in humanities, natural science, and social science during their first two years. Highly respected conservative professors teach at Hillsdale including Dr. Burt Folsom (history) and Dr. Mickey Craig (political science).

Students at this southern Michigan campus hear from one of the largest and most distinguished lecture programs in the country. Hillsdale’s Center for Constructive Alternatives (CCA) has sponsored over 1,100 speakers since 1971, including conservative luminaries such as Ronald Reagan, Margaret Thatcher, and Walter Williams. Students are required to attend two hours of CCA seminars in order to graduate.

Independence is an important theme at Hillsdale. Upon its founding in 1844, it was the nation’s first college to prohibit discrimination based on race, sex, or religion in its charter. Ever since, the institution has not taken a penny from the federal government. When some students received federal loans in the 1970s, Hillsdale quickly reacted by maintaining independence and rejecting government quotas. Even given the absence of government funding, Hillsdale remains a great value because it continually provides privately funded financial aid packages.

Hillsdale provides students with a well-rounded education that focuses on liberty. Students learn what liberty means and the moral conditions of its preservation. They develop the skills to be productive citizens and the character to be good ones. The mission statement sums up the college well. It reads: “The College considers itself a trustee of modern man’s intellectual and spiritual inheritance from the Judeo-Christian faith and Greco-Roman culture, a heritage finding its clearest expression in the American experiment of self-government under law.”

Heritage Foundation

LINK: http://www.heritage.org/

The Heritage Foundation is a unique institution-a public policy research organization, or "think tank". We draw solutions to contemporary problems from the ideas, principles and traditions that make America great. We are not afraid to begin our sentences with the words "We believe," because we do believe: in individual liberty, free enterprise, limited government, a strong national defense, and traditional American values. We want an America that is safe and secure; where choices (in education, health care and retirement) abound; where taxes are fair, flat, and comprehensible; where everybody has the opportunity to go as far as their talents will take them; where government concentrates on its core functions, recognizes its limits and shows favor to none. And the policies we propose would accomplish these things. Our expert staff—with years of experience in business, government and on Capitol Hill—don't just produce research. We generate solutions consistent with our beliefs and market them to the Congress, the Executive Branch, the news media and others. These solutions build on our country's economic, political and social heritage to produce a safer, stronger, freer, more prosperous America. And a safer, more prosperous, freer world. As conservatives, we believe the values and ideas that motivated our Founding Fathers are worth conserving. And as policy entrepreneurs, we believe the most effective solutions are consistent with those ideas and values. We believe that ideas have consequences, but that those ideas must be promoted aggressively. So, we constantly try innovative ways to market our ideas. We are proud of our broad base of support among the American people and we accept no government funds. Our vision is to build an America where freedom, opportunity, prosperity and civil society flourish.
